In the years between the world wars, armored warfare's evolution was largely experimental. Nations had varied views on its future. Its design started in 1934, with three companies submitting proposals. Krupp's VK2001/K was chosen, with production beginning in 1936. The Panzer IV D featured increased side and rear armor, an external gun mantle, and a re-introduced hull machine-gun. It served in Poland, France, the Balkans, North Africa, and the Soviet Union.
